For the last 20 years the videogame industry has experienced unprecedented progress partially motivated by stunning technological advances. Nevertheless, the growth of the industry has favored the birth of a corporate behemoth that is more motivated to pursue monetary gains than to produce creative gaming experiences. As a result, mainstream videogames typically iterate simplistic formulas that have worked for the masses in the past rather than pushing for creative progress.
This gaming industry dynamics mercilessly transforms artistic licenses into key chains, t-shirts and coffee mugs. That reality is worrisome for those of us who try and do things in a different way. During the 80’s, game developers were engaged in an artistic exploration and, consequently, we played fresh and ever more creative videogames. That was the unmistakable light emitted by something that is at its beginnings. Obviously, now we are neither in that phase anymore, nor would we attempt to reproduce the vitality of those first moments of the industry. Instead, we begin with the acceptance that the flower has already bloomed and withered, and so we take on the journey of making the next blossoming spectacular.
Fortunately, the long winter is ending and the concept “Indie” has arrived to see us into a new spring. Not anymore as a niche rivaling sector outside the industry, but as an evolutive consequence of the very industry. While small game studios had originally struggled to survive under the shadow of the bigger mainstream companies, recent technological advances now allow small studios to pursue ambitious creative projects despite their limited resources.
At Tanuki Game Studio we strive, with your support, to work around some of the filters of the hyper-normalizing mainstream videogame industry. We have a lot to say and share with you, hence, we work constantly to transmit it fluidly in a universal and fun way, that is, videogames. What we do is a sort of artistic and reflective craftsmanship aimed at communicating our world vision. We work to build a challenging and decision making oriented experience that goes beyond pure entertainment.
We take care to infuse our games with the essence of the great games from the past, when the mainstream was still undefined. Additionally, we believe that a concoction of character and identity requires slow cooking in order to get infused with a soul.
We invite you to follow Led by Light, the project into which we are currently putting all our efforts and talents.
